This month, we’ll be visiting Newstead Abbey to develop our shutter speed skills, experimenting with flowing water, moving vehicles, and other dynamic subjects to create both motion blur and freeze-frame effects.

Entry is £6 per car, so we'd appreciate it if we could minimise the number of vehicles by car-sharing where possible. The club will cover the entrance costs.

However, if the weather is totally unsuitable, we will organise an indoor event at the Village Hall.

We will visit Newstead Abbey to photograph the waterfalls as part of developing our understanding of shutter speed and its effect on moving water. The waterfalls and streams within the grounds will provide an ideal subject for experimenting with different camera settings. By using a tripod and adjusting the shutter speed from fast settings, such as 1/250th of a second, to much slower exposures lasting several seconds, we will observe how the appearance of the water changes. Faster shutter speeds will freeze the movement of the water, capturing splashes and droplets in sharp detail, while slower shutter speeds will create a smooth, silky effect that emphasises the flow and motion of the scene.

During the outing, we will explore the relationship between shutter speed, aperture, ISO and the use of neutral density filters to achieve the desired exposure and creative effect. By practising with a range of settings and reviewing the results, we will gain a better understanding of how shutter speed can be used both technically and creatively in photography. This visit to Newstead Abbey will help us develop greater confidence in controlling the camera and will improve our ability to capture different moods and atmospheres within landscape photographs.
