Mastering Low-light photography – A Club Presentation by Jan Hunter

Low-light photography opens up a fascinating world of creative possibilities, allowing photographers to capture scenes and atmospheres that are often overlooked during daylight hours. By using slower shutter speeds and careful camera control, it is possible to reveal detail, colour and mood that the human eye may not immediately notice. From illuminated buildings and reflections on wet streets to twilight landscapes and cityscapes after dark, low-light photography encourages photographers to think differently about exposure and composition.

One of the most popular techniques in low-light photography is the creation of light trails. By using a long exposure, moving light sources such as vehicle headlights and taillights are transformed into dynamic streaks of colour that add energy and movement to an image. Success depends on balancing shutter speed, aperture and ISO settings, while using a tripod to keep the camera perfectly steady. Experimenting with different exposure times and viewpoints can produce striking results, turning everyday traffic scenes into vibrant and artistic photographs that showcase the beauty of motion.
